The Battle of Mini-Series: Lex Cove Takes On Nicole Kidman

We all know I’m a sl*t for a good mini-series but in case you didn’t know, I will tell you. I'm a slu*t for a good mini-series. I've seen them all White Lotus, Mare of Eastown, The Queen’s Gambit, Little Fires Everywhere, Maid, The Act, Dopesick, and the list goes on.  To put it simply, if it's under 10 episodes and 1 season, I've probably seen it. My friends all have started to ask me for their mini-series recommendations. like their own personal IMDB catered toward their needs, a New York Times Book Review for the mini-series, if you will. But, what people may not realize is that Nicole Kidman is an even bigger slut for a mini-series than I am, in her own way.

The award-winning actress has starred in not 1 but 3 big hit mini-series. And now because no one asked I’m going to list them in order of what I think is best and why.

Big Little Lies

First of all, it was done by HBO, so I knew automatically it was gonna be good. This story is so intricate and with an all-star cast, so what was there not to like? (I even like Shailene Woodley in it and for me, that’s hard to do). And don’t even get me started on how good Zoe Kravitz looks throughout it (talk about girl crush). the story itself was incredible, the character development was great and with each episode, you could feel yourself growing toward and relating to the characters more and more. This is something difficult to do in a mini-series, compared to a regular one due to the lack of time. It was the mini-series that had the most buzz around it early on because Reese Witherspoon was behind the production but I really did love how they adapted the novel. Overall, it’s one of my favorites and my only qualm is that it really should have just been one season, instead of two. But what can you do?

  • 9 Perfect Strangers

I thoroughly enjoyed this Hulu original series. Part of me really wished I knew it was a book before I

watched the series because I would have read it prior (I'm one of those freaks that loves a good spoiler) I guess I just thrive on knowing what’s gonna happen, but I think it would have helped me understand the ending slightly better. The story was enticing and I was waiting each week to watch the new episode, excited to see what would happen next. But, I was let down by the ending. After the final episode, I didn’t feel the closure I was necessarily looking for. However, Melissa McCarthy in it was phenomenal and her love interest was definitely my type and easy on the eyes which I truly loved for myself. And again, Nicole absolutely crushed this role, outshining the rest of the cast by miles.

  •  The Undoing

So Nicole stars in yet another HBO mini-series and I will say this one did disappoint (quite shocking for HBO). Hugh Grant in it though good was honestly an extremely annoying character and overall I thought the plot development was very mediocre at best. The ending was not good in my personal opinion and this isn’t one I typically recommend first if you’re asking. However, it was entertaining and despite how easy it was to call the ending, Hugh & Nicole's chemistry throughout it was the redeeming factor but this is something you would hope to get from two seasoned actors.

  • Sharp Objects

Now, I know what you're all thinking. Alex, Nicole Kidman didn’t star in Sharp Objects! And you would be correct. But I would also say that you, my friends, are some smarty pants. Because you don’t want to know how many people have talked to me about this show thinking it was Nicole Kidman and not Amy Adams.

I guess they only think there can be only one hot redhead in Hollywood. The show is great though and I highly recommend watching it if you haven’t seen it yet, especially if you liked the mini-series listed above. And I will say, Amy Adams absolutely crushes it. Perhaps the two red-heads should collaborate sometime soon? I hope putting it out into the universe will help make it happen.

And let's not forget about the fact that she is also an incredibly accomplished movie star. From Moulin Rouge to Bombshell, to Eyes Wide Shut working with directors like Stanley Kubrick and more the actress is extremely well versed. Most recently she starred in the biopic Being The Ricardos where she plays Lucille Ball. Though the film is not my favorite to come out of 2021, I thought her acting was superb (per usual) and loved the exposé aspect of the piece. Bringing light to the way Hollywood used to be (and still can be now), how groundbreaking the show I Love Lucy was and how Luicill was the woman behind it all. Pushing for change and challenging the networks while showing the dramatized (though I've heard rumors it was not that dramatized) relationship she has with Desi Arnez.

Her range of acting is incredible and don’t even get me started on her accents, I mean come on. The fact that she’s Australian? Your girl didn’t know that for YEARS. YEARS. But I also think that with every character she plays there is a part of her playing to her feminine yet powerful side. Giving women a voice in a lot of ways and attempting to bring some light to the feelings and emotions they have, whether it be an abused wife, a sexually harassed woman, a mother who lost their child, or the only woman in a room full of men, and while she never justifies their actions, she at least lets you in to see the pain and hardship they have been through, pushing boundaries in her own way (I also find it important to note her own growth as well, aka going from Tom Cruise to Keith Urban).

And if she hasn’t been killing the game enough (and or her characters may just be doing the killing👀), she was recently on the cover of Vanity Fair for the 28th Annual Hollywood Issue. And after a long time of staring at it and reading multiple tweets, I could finally pinpoint the vibes she was serving. The answer? Desperate Housewives of Wisteria Lane. And she honestly was doing it better than they ever did.  Oh and by the way, did I mention she’s 54? And looks like that. Yeah. Incredibly powerful to say the least.

Nicole, if you are reading this (which I highly doubt but hey, a girl can dream) keep doing what you're doing. Checking your IMDB to see if you are staring in a new mini-series has become one of my favorite pass times and a source of hope through these covid times. I hope to see you on my TV screen soon, but not for too long, only the appropriate amount of time for a mini-series to be on.

So, the question now is who do you think is the bigger slut for a mini-series, me or Nicole?
